“… strangely prophetic…” – NY Times

In October 2009, a composer/lyricist team was asked to select a fortune cookie. They created a piece based on the fortune. Two weeks later, they presented their work to the next artist in the series. This artist then had two weeks to create a piece based on the work shown to him (never having seen the fortune), and then presented his art to the next artist. She then created a piece…and then another artist, and then another artist… eventually, ten in all.

From April 21st – May 1st 2010, the assembled works of all ten artists will be presented live, in-sequence, at the
Wild Project in New York City’s East Village.

An Imperfect Heaven

A Hungarian family must confront the post-communist, Americanized world that has drastically altered their lives…and their deaths.

Frightened and disoriented, Sabrina stumbles her way through a cold and indiscernible space, where time lurches forward, rushes back…and disarmingly stands still. In this liminal world, Sabrina and her divided Hungarian kin struggle violently against the infiltration of fast food, designer clothing, infidelity, assimilation and uncompromising youth. And all the while, the stars shine above Balaton.

Electric Pear kicks off its fourth season with the World Premiere of Balaton by Ashlin Halfnight, presented with the support of the Hungarian Cultural Center and the Extremely Hungary Festival. Set in a tenuous afterlife, Balaton is a multi-generational drama that charts a fractured Hungarian family’s fight for unity and security in a world after the fall of the Iron Curtain.

Balaton will be presented in concurrence with the Extremely Hungary Festival, a yearlong celebration showcasing contemporary Hungarian visual, performing, and literary arts in New York and Washington, D.C., throughout 2009. The festival reveals the roots of Hungary’s thriving contemporary culture and its impact on American society through a broad spectrum of events at leading cultural institutions including: Lincoln Center, BAM, Galapagos, and The Jewish Museum. The festival is part of a larger arts movement in 2009, bringing artists and exhibitions from former Eastern Bloc countries to NYC. The closing night of Balaton will also commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall (November 9, 1989) and the collapse of the Iron Curtain.

In a crumbling, burnt-out America, an underwater bunker stores the relics of our everyday lives: Barbie, Moby Dick, Twinkies and bond traders are all preserved in a labyrinthine warehouse, shelved in boxes, awaiting the stabilization of the continent above. One woman is charged with safeguarding our cultural artifacts for the rebuilding of a great society… but the walls are leaking, resources are running out, and her wide-eyed assistant is hell-bent on losing her virginity to the first man she can find.

As the facility nears collapse, it’s clear that vast quantities of our legacy will be lost…

“… strangely prophetic…” – NY Times

On September 22, 2008, a poet was asked to select and open a fortune cookie. Two weeks later, she presented her work to a painter. Two weeks after that, the painter’s work was presented to a puppetry collective. And then another artist, and then another artist… eventually, ten in all.

From February 25-28, 2009, the assembled works of all ten artists will be presented live, in-sequence, at the Wild Project in New York City’s East Village.

“Electric Pear Productions has taken the grade-school game of Telephone to a new level.” – Time Out New York

Witness the next stage in the convergence of media. Now in its third season, Synesthesia is a live, annual event which unites a select and diverse range of arts and artists for four days only. Synesthesia is an Electric Pear exclusive production, conceived by Ashlin Halfnight and Melanie Sylvan, and staged for the first time in 2007. This year’s show is directed by Brooklyn-based artists Ilana Manaster and Gregory Stuart Edwards, and offers up an evening of original film, music, painting, performance, dance, and cuisine.

Synesthesia 2008 (in it’s second year) is the culmination of five months of work by over a dozen breakout artists in 9 different genres – from film and dance to comedy and spoken word.

And it all starts with a fortune cookie…

In the fall of 2007, the first artist chose a cookie and used the enclosed fortune to inspire his film. After a few days of furious work, he passed his work off to a writer, and, in turn, the writer created a piece that was passed on to the next artist – and so on, and so on…

Audiences are given the opportunity to trace not only the overall development of the five-month game of artistic telephone, but also each individual artist’s point of attack – and what they generated from their given circumstances.

Synesthesia 2008 is:

Drop all your pre-conceived notions of a one-person play: hop in a speeding car through Eastern Europe, cram into a caravan to a Midwestern amusement park, and jump on the L train to the Canarsie Jewish Center for the most romantic wedding ever. Told with laughter and love, this uniquely American story stars Nicole Golden as Lisa, with direction by Matt M. Morrow.

Dad drives himself through the Walmart display window on a Vespa…

and post-funeral, his wife and kids are left debt-ridden and mystified. As mom ramps up her mid-life money-making scheme with a Russian cosmetologist of questionable reputation, her daughter faces the angry mobs at the abortion clinic, and her son gets embroiled in a wild search for Dad’s missing corpse. Baby Face charts one Florida family’s bizarre and hilarious journey through grief and guilt – into the heart of American consumerism and a sickening obsession with wrinkle-free skin.

Baby Face brings together some of the most talked-about emerging theatre artists in New York City. Ashlin Halfnight has been lauded as a playwright “who has a gift for foreshadowing…with a finesse that is rare for a new writer” by The New York Times. (April 2007) Alexis Poledouris leads a quartet of stellar actors: Rebecca Henderson*, Jordan Kaplan*, Michael McGregor Mahoney*, and Carolyn Popp*. The team of designers includes Lighting Designer, Gina Scherr (Safe in Hell, Yale Rep); Scenic Designer, Jesse Poleshuck (Sly Fox, Broadway); Sarah Laux, Costume Designer (Assistant on Shining City, Broadway), and Mark Valadez, Sound Designer (God’s Waiting Room, PS122).
